Until this fall, a sit-down breakfast in Cleary Square usually meant waiting until 9 a.m. That's when Delicias Colombianas opens at 1231 River Street and starts serving Colombian breakfast. Before that hour, the choice was Dunkin'.
Now the lights come on three hours earlier at the corner of River Street and Hyde Park Avenue. Sunrise Café Bagels & Diner opens at 6 a.m. in the space Papa Gino's held for about sixty years, and it still has the big pizza oven.
The opening is part of a longer pattern. Hyde Park's morning spot came back as a diner with a menu that runs all day, in a room that has been a restaurant since the 1960s. Over the past decade, several coffee houses tried to fill those hours and closed or announced closings.
A corner that has always fed people
The Papa Gino's at Hyde Park Avenue and River Street opened in the mid-1960s. It was only the fifth location of a chain that started in East Boston as Piece O'Pizza and grew to more than 200 restaurants across New England. A fire destroyed it in 2005, and it reopened. It outlasted the Brigham's across the street. Universal Hub reported that it served its last pie the weekend before October 27, 2025.
That history helped the next tenant. When the Boston Licensing Board approved Sunrise in late August 2026, it didn't require meetings with abutters or the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, because the café was moving into a space that had already been licensed. The owners are Emilio López Hernández and Zolita Nineth Garcia, a couple from Dedham, and they had already started renovating by the time of the vote. Their plan called for 34 seats and licensed hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. About ten months after the pizza ovens went cold, the corner had a new operator lined up.
Morning hours in Hyde Park since 2011
Before this fall, here's how mornings near Cleary Square had gone:
- 2011 to 2017: Bean & Cream ran a coffeehouse at 680 Truman Parkway for six years and closed on May 31, 2017.
- 2018 to January 2024: Coffee Break Cafe opened in the same space, serving espresso drinks, blended drinks, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, pastries and muffins. Its last service was at 3 p.m. on January 27, 2024, after six years.
- May 2023 to fall 2025: Starbucks opened at the Shops at Riverwood, 850 River Street, near the Mattapan line. In September 2025, Universal Hub reported that the store was closing because of a corporate restructuring.
- October 2025: The Papa Gino's at Hyde Park Avenue and River Street closed.
Universal Hub summed up that history in its August 2026 story on the Sunrise approval:
"Hyde Park has historically been a rough neighborhood for coffee purveyors with names that don't start with a D."
Both Truman Parkway cafés lasted six years. The Starbucks was set to close a little more than two years after it opened. Each was a coffee-first business with a pastry case. Sunrise is set up differently.
A coffee counter that serves dinner
Sunrise serves coffee from New England Coffee, but coffee is only one part of the menu. Universal Hub's first visit found a full diner breakfast:
- Eggs and omelets
- French toast, pancakes and waffles
- Bacon and house-made home fries
- Bagels with cream cheese
- Breakfast tacos with eggs, cheese, pico de gallo and avocado, plus bacon or sausage
The reviewer's Sunrise breakfast came with two scrambled eggs, two strips of bacon and home fries, and a couple of pancakes on the side.
Later in the day the menu shifts. Boston.com's October 22 roundup of new restaurants lists breakfast sandwiches on cheese-topped bagels and pancake combos in the morning, birria tacos at lunch, and spaghetti and meatballs at dinner, with salads too. You can get any of it to go or eat in the dining room.
That's the key difference from the Truman Parkway cafés and the Riverwood Starbucks. A coffee shop depends on the morning rush. Sunrise has a lunch crowd and a dinner crowd to fall back on, and its license runs to 10 p.m. Papa Gino's worked the same way. It was a place for a meal at most hours, and it stayed on this corner for six decades.
Getting there and ordering
The process is simple:
- Park across River Street. Universal Hub's reviewer used the municipal lot across River, the same lot people use for Ron's.
- Order at the counter. Then find a seat.
- Wait for your food. Staff bring it to your table.
The reviewer stopped in on a morning milk run to the Shaw's down the street. Because Sunrise opens at 6 a.m., it fits before work or before the weekend grocery run.
On the counter staff, Universal Hub wrote that they were "friendly and patient with people easily befuddled in the morning," including customers stuck on how they want their eggs.
Where it fits in a Cleary Square morning
Here's how the main morning options near the square compare, based on reported hours and menus:
| Spot | Location | Morning start | What you'll find |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunrise Café Bagels & Diner | River Street and Hyde Park Avenue, former Papa Gino's | 6 a.m. | Diner breakfast, bagels, breakfast tacos, then lunch and dinner |
| Delicias Colombianas | 1231 River Street | 9 a.m. | Colombian breakfast, arepas, sancocho, seafood, pasta, steaks |
| Dunkin' | Three locations on Hyde Park Avenue | Varies by location | Coffee and grab-and-go |
The two sit-down spots split the morning. Sunrise takes the early hours and Delicias Colombianas picks up at 9 a.m., both within a short walk on River Street. When Universal Hub reviewed Sunrise, it pointed out that before the opening, the only morning choices on this stretch were the three Dunkin' locations and Delicias.
Another diner is in the pipeline
Cleary Square may not be the only part of Hyde Park getting a diner. In October 2026, Dalfior Development filed plans for a five-story, 36-condo building at 64 Poydras Street, near the Hyde Park and Mattapan line. The plans include a 1,900-square-foot ground-floor diner with an outdoor patio. The diner is part of a proposal that is still in the filing stage.
Until then, the diner that's open is at River Street and Hyde Park Avenue, where the doors open at 6 a.m. in a room with a sixty-year-old restaurant history and a pizza oven nobody removed.
